Never Sink Tools has a nifty “conversion kit” for creating low cat tunnels by bending EMT conduit. So we have been working on getting conduit bent, attaching them to the beds, then covering them with burlap using a nifty system that uses stretchy cord and anchors them with metal loops. You can slide the burlap up and down to get in the beds really easy, and so far they have withstood 45 mph gusts.

I am trying to get away from using a lot of plastic on the beds, so burlap is great alternative. It provides shade in the summer, protection from frost in the winter, and some (at least the larger) pest protection. And at the end of its life cycle it is compostable.

Unfortunately, the hoops were taller than I was expecting, the burlap wasn’t wide enough, and I’ve been sewing 30′ runs of burlap together to make them! It is a job and I can only do 1 or two at a time then need to take a few day break from that, but eventually, we will have all our beds covered. 🙂
