This is a new process for me. I’ve planted many seeds using coconut coir, but they didn’t thrive very well. I did some research, and found that you need to add some nutition to the coir, and there were several farms that used earthworm castings. So I took an organic brick of coir, 4 1/2 quarts of water, and once it was soil, added 4 cups of worm castings for an approximate 80% coir and 20% castings.

I then filled my little burpee seed starter trays, and put them on some heat mats in my greenhouse. This is the first time I’ve tried heating my starts. I planted 216 cells of lettuce seeds and 12 or so of artichoke.

I am using organic seeds to start all of this during my transition to organic, most of these were either little gem romain or green & red salad bowl lettuce. Below the pots you can see my carrots, I grow these cute round carrots.

I also tied up more of my cherry tomatoes in my tomato jungle in my greenhouse. Next year, I plan to learn how to trim these better so they don’t take over !
