We have made the decision to transition to organic production. Upon research, I found out that the garden beds that I so proudly painted and made would not be organic compatible. You cannot use latex paint where it will contact the soil inside the garden beds.
So thus starts the long process of changing out all of the wood in all of the beds to 2x4s that are unpainted or treated in any way. I hope to have this done by the end of the year, so that we can start the countdown to organic January 1st.
Transitioning to organic is a 3 year process where during that time you develop recordkeeping, an organic service plan, and not use any prohibited substance anywhere on the property.

Other than the paint on the garden beds, I haven’t used any prohibited substances ever on any crops I’ve grown on my property. Unfortunately, I have used some ant spray in some of the non-product areas that is banned, so I can’t start my last applied date until after that was last applied, and I get these beds changed out.
So today we cut back the elm tree we would really like gone, and pulled out all the old boards on NS3 Bed and started rebuilding them. This was the peppers bed, and one of those I don’t have in production right now so figured we’d start with this one. I plan on adding more Dr Q’s Super Soil, then putting down landscape cloth with holes and plant all my lettuce I’m sprouting in the greenhouse when it is ready in this bed.
I have been passionate about eating organic for many years and have tried to do so as much as possible. I’m proud to be working on growing organic food for my family and my community.
